Dale Evans’ Last Chicago Engagement

Look what Larry Z. just sent me!

This ad was for Mom’s (DaleEvans) last appearance with the Anson Weeks Orchestra in Chicago.  They opened at the Cocoanut Grove (nightclub), at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles, on May 8th and were there for five weeks.  This was where Mom was “discovered” by a scout from Twentieth Century Fox Studio.  She was signed to a one-year contract and made two pictures for Fox.

No wonder they wanted her for movies, look how gorgeous she was!

This is an amazing piece of entertainment history. We watched “San Fernando Valley” this weekend and she looks like this picture but not so va va voom! But, she had the long dark hair and was so tiny she looked like a kid. Then that voice comes out! Whoa! It gives her so much more substance than other actresses.

I like the movies where they give her a scene as a club singer so we can see what she was like back then. Knowing how many gigs she must have done like this one, it’s no wonder she developed that great sound.

    1. She was drop dead gorgeous! She had dark auburn hair (just like Grandma Smith), hazel eyes (they changed color depending on mood and what color she was wearing) and no freckles! What a combination!!! Cheryl

When I lived in Chicago, I live near THE AROGON BALLROOM. Used to pass by and wonder what went on there….., as I was only 17, and from THE SALT.!! :). haha. Wished I could have attended some of those Big Band concerts. We also love reading all the testimonials that people & magazines have written about You & your parents. Love & Miss YOU & Larry.
